Man Jailed for Intoxication Manslaughter

On Tuesday, September 20, a man pleaded no contest to intoxication manslaughter and was jailed for 10 years.

The sentencing related to an accident on January 17, 2015 when 29 year Jose Guadalupe Ortiz Jr. was driving drunk and crashed into a tree, fence and house, killing 28 year old Sandy Valero, his wife and the mother of his three children.

The couple had been at a family barbecue but Valero had begun to argue with Ortiz’ mother and sister so they decided to leave. On the journey home, when Ortiz was driving on Rolling Ridge Drive near Clover Drive on the city’s Northwest Side, he and Valero began to argue and he says she hit him in the face which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

Toxicology showed he had a blood alcohol level of .12, as well as evidence of marijuana and cocaine.

Ortiz had already orders to get treatment for both alcohol abuse and mental health issues, but had not complied with them.
