Tire Safety Feature

Every year car manufacturers try and come up with new safety features to try and reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on American roadways.

Once such feature is an automatic tire pressure monitoring system, which is required by all passenger vehicles which weigh 10,000 pounds or less, since 2008. Almost all new cars, irrespective of weight have this as a safety feature including all BMWs. There are sensors on the wheels which alert the driver if the tire pressure is too low by either lighting up a symbol on the instrument panel or sounding an alert or both of these things. Some vehicles, like the Corvette also have a different tire safety system which allows the vehicle to run for around 50 miles with a flat tire.

Having a blow out can be exceedingly dangerous and the main reason for tire blows out is an underinflated tire, so when you buy your next vehicle try and ensure it has one or both of these safety features.

How To Check The Safety Features In a Car

When you are shopping for a new car, or buying a used one, you should not only think about how it drives and what it looks like, you should also check all of the safety features.

The first thing to check is the seat belts. When you take your test drive, ensure that they fit you properly and that they are comfortable. Seat belts are made to ensure that you stay inside your vehicle if you have a crash and will also help stop you smashing into the steering wheel or windshield. However the newer seat belts also have other important features.

An adjustable upper belt will allow you to adjust where the shoulder strap is and is especially useful for those who are a little shorter than the average as it stops the belt cutting into your neck which can be uncomfortable. Some seat belts also have what is called a pretensioner which allows the belt to tighten and fit snugly. In addition some models have energy management features which mean the belt will give a little in a bad accident which means there will be less chance of the seat belt injuring your chest.

If you have a rear center seat in the vehicle some have a lap belt or a shoulder belt which will help protect passengers in the rear center seat.
