Three People Died in Car Accident

On Wednesday afternoon, December 21, three people died in a car accident on the far West Side.

According to authorities, the accident happened around 1 p.m. at State Highway 151 and West Loop 1604, in the 11200 block of Alamo Ranch Parkway near Santikos’ Casa Blanca Theater.

The Bexar County Shriff’s Office said that a black pickup and a Toyota silver sedan collided at the intersection in front of the theater.

The three people inside the sedan died, two men and one woman, one at the scene and two later in hospitals in Westover Hills. The driver of the pickup was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation but as yet the reason for the crash is unknown. Toxicology tests are awaited on the victims to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved and the pick up driver is cooperating with authorities.

Five Car Crash Leads to Death of Man

On Thursday, November 19, a five car crash led to the death of a man.

According to authorities, the crash happened on the 3900 block of Thousand Oaks Drive and it appears that a man driving a black Corvette was drag racing with another vehicle, a silver Infiniti. Then a third driver in oncoming traffic tried to make a left turn. The driver of the Corvette was unable to stop and hit that vehicle, then the Infiniti smashed into the Corvette which then lost control and hit a power box and utility pole.

Two other vehicles were also damaged by debris flying from the wreckage.

The driver of the corvette was 31 year old Jesse Zerwas and he was ejected from the car, just before it burst into flames. He was transported to SAMMC but died the next morning from his injuries.

All four lanes of the roadway were covered in debris and smoke and according to witnesses there are often people speeding in the same area and in addition there are often drag races there.

Two People Killed in Crash with Drunk Driver

On Saturday, October 22, two people were killed in a crash due to a drunk driver in Northeast Bexar County.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 12 p.m. Saturday on Loop 1604, between Schuwirth Road and FM 1346. A Suburban collided head-on with a Ford F-150 pickup truck after the pickup truck, being driven by 49 year old Justin Fey, entered into the opposite lane while passing another vehicle.

A man and a woman in the Suburban died shortly after the crash. Three children in the vehicle were injured and all taken to University hospital, one by AirLife. One of them was flown to University Hospital by AirLife. All three are expected to survive.

Fey only suffered minor injuries but he was believed to be under the influence of alcohol. Following toxicology results he was found to have been driving drunk and is facing two counts of intoxication manslaughter, two counts of intoxication assault and one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The victims’ names have not been released.

Man Jailed for Intoxication Manslaughter

On Tuesday, September 20, a man pleaded no contest to intoxication manslaughter and was jailed for 10 years.

The sentencing related to an accident on January 17, 2015 when 29 year Jose Guadalupe Ortiz Jr. was driving drunk and crashed into a tree, fence and house, killing 28 year old Sandy Valero, his wife and the mother of his three children.

The couple had been at a family barbecue but Valero had begun to argue with Ortiz’ mother and sister so they decided to leave. On the journey home, when Ortiz was driving on Rolling Ridge Drive near Clover Drive on the city’s Northwest Side, he and Valero began to argue and he says she hit him in the face which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

Toxicology showed he had a blood alcohol level of .12, as well as evidence of marijuana and cocaine.

Ortiz had already orders to get treatment for both alcohol abuse and mental health issues, but had not complied with them.

Three Pedestrians Injured in Separate Accidents

Over the weekend of August 20 and 21, three pedestrians were injured in separate accidents involving vehicles.

On Saturday at 11 p.m. a man walking along Interstate 35 was hit by an 18-wheeler while trying to cross the northbound lanes near Walters Street. According to police the truck driver did not see the victim until he had hit him. The unnamed victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Only around ten minutes later, another man was hit by a car on Rigsy Avenue near Pecan Valley Drive. On this occasion there were two men walking and one of them stopped in a turn lane where he was hit by a car. Once again the driver did not see the victim who was taken to the same hospital, also in a critical condition. The driver will not be charged.

The third accident happened just after 2 a.m. when a man was hit by a car as he was crossing North Zarzamora and West Laurel. He was in stable condition when taken to University Hospital and again the driver claimed not to have seen him.

Three Vehicle Wreck leads to Fatality

On Saturday, July 16, a three vehicle wreck led to one fatality and two serious injuries.

According to San Antonio police, the accident happened at around 4 a.m. when a driver was entering the Interstate 10 through the ramp on Vance Jackson and then he hit an oncoming vehicle. The driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the median. Subsequently he was hit by another sport utility vehicle and two people, the driver and the passenger, were ejected and landed in the roadway where they were then run over by oncoming traffic. One of those, 35 year old Arthur Elias was pronounced dead at the scene and the other plus one other person was taken to University Hospital in a critical condition.

The accident caused that part of the Interstate to be closed for hours and police also questioned the driver who caused the crash. So far no arrests have been made nor charges filed.

Man Changing Tire Killed By Hit and Run Driver

On Saturday afternoon, June 18 a man died when run when hit by a hit and run driver.

According to police, the accident happened at around 5.30 on the southbound Interstate 35 near downtown at the Nogalitos exit, which is exit 35. Cesar Lopez, aged 40 was outside his vehicle as he was changing a tire; when he was hit by what police believe was a blue pickup truck which may have been pulling a trailer. Having hit Lopez, the person driving the truck did not stop but kept going. Police say they are still looking for the truck and the driver but point out that either the truck or the trailer may have damage on its left side.

Lopez was given CPR by emergency services but was pronounced dead at the scene and police are still searching for the person responsible who they think might be an older person. They did say that a witness followed the hit and run driver for a considerable way, to Highway 16 but then the truck disappeared.

Woman Dies in Connection with Hit and Run

On Saturday, May 21, a woman died in connection with a hit and run accident.

According to New Braunfels Police the accident happened at around 10 a.m. when they were called to the scene of a three vehicle accident at the intersection of FM 725 and East Klein Road. A gray Dodge Durango had been involved in a minor fender bender with a black Ford F-150 pickup truck. It then appears that the driver of the Dodge fled the scene by driving around the other vehicle, then crossed the center line and drove head long into a blue Chevy Sonic being driven by 41 year old Jennifer Cicha of New Braunfels.

Chica died of her injuries and the 61 year old man who was driving the Dodge Durango was critically injured and taken to Resolute Health Hospital in New Braunfels before being transferred to San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The driver of the Ford F-150 pickup was not injured in the first accident.

The cause of the accidents remains under investigation, and police say criminal charges are possible.

A Fatal Accident When Worker Caught in Trash Compactor

On Tuesday, April 12 a worker died having been caught in a trash compactor near San Antonio.

According to Bexar County Sheriff’s Office the accident happened at around 11 a.m. in the 1300 block of Dezarae near Highway 90 and Potranco in the west of Bexar County. Benjamin Garza, aged 26 and known as Wicked J. worked for Metro Waste Systems which is a family trash pickup business. He became trapped in the back of the garbage collection truck and even though the truck driver called 911 immediately, Garza was found deceased inside the compactor.

Garza had been working for the firm on a full time basis since the beginning of the year and to date the exact cause of death has not been issued by the Medical Examiner.

The Sheriff’s office is treating the death as an accident.

Garza was also a performer with the Illest Rockers and taught free dance classes at the John Tobin Recreation Center.

School Bus in Crash on Northwest Side

On Wednesday morning, March 9 a Boerne ISD school bus was in a crash on the Northwest Side.

According to Bexar County Sheriff’s Office the crash happened around 7:30 a.m. in the 25000 Ralph Fair Road. The driver of the bus was headed west on Interstate 10 when he lost control of the bus, possibly due to the wet roads, causing it to skid and flip on its side. It came to rest at a tree line on the side of the road.

At the time of the crash, the bus was carrying special needs students to Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High School and to Boerne Middle School South. In addition to the driver, a school monitor and two high school aged children were on the bus.

None of the children were injured, even though the bus flipped. However, the driver and the school monitor were both injured although their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
